A guide to buying luxury makeup

A guide to buying luxury makeup

If you know me then you might be aware of my hobby regarding all things beauty. However, I do not spend money mindlessly on luxury makeup as that would cost a fortune. Keep reading to know what steps I follow as a guide to buying luxury beauty.

Do your research

Being an expensive product does not really mean that it is worth the hefty price tag. I spend time reading reviews and watching Youtube videos that swatch the product before going to a counter to try it in-person. When at the counter, you can ask the sales assistant to put the product on your face to see how it looks. For a foundation, I always like to go outside in the daylight to check if it is the right match for my skin tone.

Another tip that I follow is to ask the sales assistant for a product sample as I like to sometimes try a product with leisure at home, and not make a pressured decision in the store. A good tip to avoid any impulse buys is to swatch/check/test a product in the store (or online) and come back after a day if you really want to buy it. As they say, if you can’t get it out of your head, then…

Will I genuinely use this?

It is important to take a step back when you spot a luxury makeup item that you want to buy and ask this question “will I genuinely use this?”

I mean I love a red lipstick but I rarely wear it so it would be stupid to spend £50 on one. However, nude colour lipsticks or foundations are something I am willing to splurge on. You should always buy the product that you love using on a regular basis so the cost per wear makes sense.

If you don’t love something you buy, return it. I promise you will regret keeping a £50 red lipstick you rarely touch.

Don’t buy into trends for the sake of it

An important tip to remember is to invest in classic beauty products that you will continually use and not on trendy or seasonal makeup. For example, I would not buy a Dior blue mascara because I’d probably wear it a couple of times in the summer. However, if that is your thing then you should definitely go for it!

Another tip to remember is that when confused then it is probably best to buy a cult product from a luxury brand. Cult products are usually bestsellers as they are popular with fellow luxury beauty junkies, thus making them a safe bet to dip your toes in a new brand you have not tried before.

I think that a foundation, blush, or a nude lipstick are a good place start your luxury makeup collection. Those seem to be the things that I usually gravitate towards at the counter of a luxury makeup brand.

Half the time, I buy luxury makeup because of its beautiful packaging. Pretty packaging is one of the main reasons why luxury makeup is so popular. Beautiful items like a Christian Louboutin lipstick are like little treasure pieces that you would cherish in your makeup collection forever and they look so damn pretty sitting on your vanity.

I am aware that drugstore makeup has a lot of great products now, however, there is nothing more satisfying than the weight and the magnetic click of a Tom Ford lipstick or a Dior compact. However, it is important to note that sometimes even luxury beauty brands skimp on their packaging. Thus, ensure that you are happy with all the aspects of a luxury makeup item before buying.

Some items in my makeup collection that I personally think are worth the splurge.

Lipsticks and tinted lip balms are one of my favourite makeup items to splurge on. When starting your luxury makeup collection, I think it is best to start with a lipstick colour that you can wear every day and also would love to carry in your bag. There is no novelty in buying a decadent red lipstick if you would only wear it two times in a year (been there done that!).

One of the things that I love doing is pulling a fancy ass lipstick out of my bag for a touch-up with something like a Christian Louboutin lipstick. This action makes me feel powerful. My other favourite luxury lipstick picks are from Tom Ford, Charlotte Tilbury, YSL, Dior and Nars.

P.S – Buying luxury lipsticks is also one of the safest beauty gifts to buy for someone if you stick with neutral/pink tones.

Foundation is one of my favourite items to invest in as I am obsessed with a great base. I am always searching for the next “it” foundation. However, I would advice buying a luxury foundation at a counter in-person where you can physically swatch and test the foundation on your skin. You should try to step outside in the daylight to check if it is a true match.

There is nothing more disappointing than buying a luxury foundation and finding that it does not match your skin tone after opening it at home. Some of my favourite luxury foundations are Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk foundation, Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder, Nars Sheer Glow and Suquu Extra Rich Cream foundation.

Concealer is a very important makeup product as it makes or breaks a look. Both the formula and the correct shade is equally important. Similar to a luxury foundation, it is best to colour match yourself at a counter rather than guess the correct shade of concealer online. I love the concealers from Bobbi Brown, Urban Decay and Nars.

I have always liked blush and highlighters, as I am all about adding a glow to my skin. I love the Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze and Glow, along with Becca and Dior highlighters. Luxury powder highlighters have finely-milled formulas that make the skin look radiant and glowy, without making it cakey. However, recently I have become more of a cream and liquid formulas convert.

My favourite luxury blushes in my collection are from Nars, Charlotte Tilbury, Burberry and Hourglass.

I wear powder eyeshadows occasionally, but on a regular basis prefer the cream version as they are so easy to apply. For cream eyeshadows, I love the Chanel Ombre Premiere Longwear Cream eyeshadow, Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerise eyeshadows and the By Terry Ombre Blackstar Melting eyeshadow. For powder eyeshadows, I like the Dior 5 Couleurs eyeshadow, Nars Duo eyeshadows and the good old M.A.C eyeshadows.

I hope this post helped you in some way. Please feel free to ask any more questions that you might have. Also, let me know which luxury makeup products are on your wishlist in the comments below.
